Homeschooling on the North Shore can extend far beyond learning at the kitchen table. Whether your family is homeschooling full-time, supplementing another educational program, or simply looking for daytime enrichment opportunities, this guide is a starting point for finding resources throughout the North Shore and nearby communities.
Programs, schedules, availability, and prices can change, so families should confirm details directly with each organization before making plans.

👨👩👧👦 Find Your Homeschool Community
One of the biggest questions new homeschool families have is simply: Where do we find other homeschoolers?
The Massachusetts Home Learning Association and MassHOPE maintain listings of groups around Massachusetts. North Shore-area options currently listed include North Shore Christian Homeschoolers, Haverhill Area Homeschoolers, and the inclusive North Suburban Homelearners. Groups may organize park days, parent support, social gatherings, classes, field trips, teen activities, and other opportunities.

There's also the North Shore Homeschool Group, which advertises classes, events, online and in-person learning, self-paced options, and community opportunities for homeschool families.
🚌 North Shore Homeschool Field Trip Ideas
The North Shore itself can become your classroom.
Wenham Museum welcomes homeschool groups to participate in its educational programs. One example is Colonial Life with the Claflins, a hands-on program for grades 2–4 where children explore daily life in Colonial Massachusetts.
North Shore Children's Museum in Peabody is a good choice for younger learners. Its 14 hands-on exhibit areas include STEM, nature, space, construction, medicine, money, and farm-to-table themes. The museum also accommodates educational group field trips.
Peabody Essex Museum in Salem can turn a day into an exploration of art, history, culture, maritime history, design, and world cultures.
Maritime Gloucester provides a natural combination of marine biology and local history. Families can explore aquarium exhibits, touch tanks, Gloucester's working waterfront, fisheries, schooners, and maritime heritage.
The Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum in Essex is a fascinating choice for studying local history, engineering, woodworking, trades, and New England's wooden shipbuilding industry.
Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich can complement studies of architecture, local history, nature, landscape design, and the early 20th century.
And don't overlook Appleton Farms. A working farm can become a lesson in biology, food systems, environmental science, agriculture, economics, sustainability, and local history.
🚗 Worth the Drive
A homeschool field trip doesn't have to stay strictly on the North Shore.
Museum of Science in Boston is an obvious destination for STEM learning, while The Harvard Museum of Natural History in Cambridge is especially useful for units on dinosaurs, evolution, minerals, geology, animals, plants, and biodiversity.
The New England Aquarium is offering special Homeschool Days every Tuesday from September 8 through December 22, 2026, with discounted admission for homeschool families who reserve in advance.

For an ambitious day trip, the New England Air Museum has scheduled special 2026–27 Homeschool Days devoted to aerospace, fixed-wing flight, and helicopters.
📚 Homeschool Curriculum Resources
Choosing curriculum can feel like the most overwhelming part of getting started. There isn't one curriculum that's right for every homeschool family. Some families purchase an all-in-one program, while others build their own curriculum by combining books, online courses, library materials, hands-on projects, field trips, and community classes.
A few resources worth exploring include:
- Khan Academy — Free lessons, exercises, videos, quizzes and tests in subjects including math, science, ELA, grammar, economics, computer programming, AP subjects and SAT preparation. Khan Academy specifically notes that it is a supplemental educational resource rather than an accredited school.
Khan Academy homeschool guide - CK-12 — Free customizable FlexBooks, interactive practice, videos and simulations covering math, science, English, social studies and other subjects. Parents can create classes, assign work and track progress.
CK-12 Homeschool Resources - K12 Learning Hub — More than 17,000 free K–12 lessons, videos and activities covering core subjects, world languages, electives and STEM.
K12 Learning Hub - Your local library — Don't underestimate this one! North Shore libraries can provide books, audiobooks, databases, research tools, museum passes, STEM kits, children's programs, book clubs, craft programs, lectures and more. Ask your children's librarian whether daytime programming can be developed specifically for local homeschool families.
Other nationally popular curriculum options families may want to investigate include Core Knowledge, Singapore Math, Saxon Math, Math-U-See, All About Reading, All About Spelling, Brave Writer, The Good and the Beautiful, Oak Meadow, Time4Learning, Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool and various classical education curricula. Because philosophies, religious content, grade coverage and costs differ considerably, families should review materials before choosing.
⚖️ New to Homeschooling in Massachusetts? Start Here
Massachusetts families should understand the state's homeschool requirements before withdrawing a child from school.
For children of compulsory school age, homeschooling requires advance approval from the school district where the child lives. Parents should notify their local district and submit the homeschool plan required under that district's policy. The district may consider curriculum/content, instructional materials, methods, duration and frequency of instruction, evaluation, and student progress.
Importantly, Massachusetts DESE says that simply notifying the district is not the same as receiving approval to begin homeschooling. Individual school committees maintain their own homeschool policies, so families should contact their home district directly.

💡 Build Your Own North Shore Homeschool Experience
One of the advantages of homeschooling is that education doesn't need to look the same every day. A week could include math and writing at home, Wednesday ecology class at Ipswich River, a library afternoon, an art museum visit in Salem, a farm science lesson in Ipswich, and Friday park time with other homeschool families.
The North Shore's combination of ocean, farms, wildlife sanctuaries, historic communities, museums, libraries, art, maritime history and outdoor spaces gives homeschool families an incredible opportunity to make the region itself part of their curriculum.
