Marblehead School of Ballet & BALAM Dance Theatre to Perform

May 28, 2026

The Marblehead School of Ballet (MSB) and BALAM Dance Theatre are coming together for a special collaborative performance at José Mateo Ballet Theatre’s 16th Annual Dance for World Community Festival.

This exciting partnership brings together MSB, a respected dance studio based in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and BALAM Dance Theatre, a New York-based nonprofit company with a satellite office in Salem. Together, they will present a vibrant program on Saturday, June 6 at 2:05 p.m. on Stage 2 in Harvard Square (Massachusetts Avenue between Putnam Avenue and Bow Street in Cambridge). The performance is free and open to the public.

The program will showcase a dynamic mix of dance styles, including Balinese, Tango, Cumbia, and modern dance. Under the direction of Paula K. Shiff, MSB dancer Masha Bondarenko will perform two modern works, I Insist and Winterreise (Winter Journey), choreographed by Ivan Korn, resident choreographer of the North Shore Civic Ballet.

MSB’s Dance Adventure students—Dr. Adora Maharaj, Rosemary Grant, and Kara-Jane Walker—will perform Cumbia Graciosa and Soñemos Tango Fusion Trio, choreographed by BALAM’s artistic director, Carlos Fittante. Set to a unique version of the classic tango Soñemos, performed in a Mariachi style by Latin pop star Rocío Dúrcal, the piece blends traditional tango movement with an innovative, unpartnered ensemble style.

Fittante will also perform the visually stunning Dragonfly Welcome Dance, inspired by Balinese tradition and adapted from BALAM’s duet Tigerlily and the Dragonfly. Featuring handcrafted bamboo wings and a vibrant costume, this piece brings a magical cultural element to the program.
